Resumen: The formation of oil emulsions causes an increase in fluid viscosity and, consequently, an increase in pressure loss in pipelines, as well as losses in the separation and pumping processes. The properties of oil emulsions are influenced by several factors, including temperature, water content, salts, among others. Thus, one of the salts that causes major changes in oil properties is barium sulfate (BaSO4), which, in addition to influencing the behavior of emulsions, forms insoluble crystals that precipitate, fouling pipelines, valves and tanks in any part of the production process. This research aims to analyze the reology and the stability of emulsions, contributing to greater efficiency in the design of separators and pumps. To this end, the phase separation of oil emulsions containing 5% to 60% distilled water or brine with 250 mg/l and 2500 mg/l of BaSO4 at a controlled temperature of 20ºC for 7 days was evaluated. The presence of barium sulfate and the increase in its concentration resulted in a decrease in the viscosity of the emulsions and caused an increase in the instability of the emulsions, where in a fraction of 40% of water with BaSO4 at a concentration of 2500 mg/l there was a separation of almost twice as much compared to that of distilled water. Another observation was regarding the separation speed, being 79.8% higher on the first day of observation in relation to the other days, thus showing greater initial instability.
