Summary: Emulsifiable metalworking fluids are a mixture of oil and water that results in an
emulsion (O/W) with lubricant and refrigerant properties, being used in various
manufacturing processes. It is estimated that millions of liters of oily effluents from
the metalworking fluids are produced annually and according to the resolutions of the
environmental agencies, a treatment is necessary before disposal. Among the
various treatment processes available, in this present research the electroflocculation
process is investigated in the treatment of emulsifiable metalworking fluids using a
reactor operating in a continuous flow with inversion of polarity and electrodes
arranged in the shape of baffles. The electroflocculation process consists in applying
an electrical potential difference between metal electrodes that act as anodes and
cathodes located in an electrolyte of metalworking fluid mixed with sodium chloride.
The formation of coagulants in situ occurs by the release of metallic ions in the anode
area and release of hydrogen gas in the cathodic area. In the emulsion produced in
this research 200 mg.L-1 of oil and 9 g.L-1 of NaCl were used. The effects of the
variation of current density, distance between electrodes, flow rate in the removal of
pollutants and energy efficiency were analyzed. There was 94% reduction in oil and
grease content and approximately 86% reduction in organic matter. These results
comply with the minimum limit established for the environmental agencies for the
disposal of this material.
