international co-tutorship
International co-tutorship, also known as co-degree, has become an increasingly common practice in Brazilian universities, following a trend that has already been consolidated in the international academic scene. This modality offers students and faculty members an expansion of scientific cooperation networks, access to new theoretical and methodological references, and significant benefits for the postgraduate programs involved.
The Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) can enter into agreements with foreign institutions to offer master's or doctoral courses under a joint supervision regime. These specific agreements are usually established based on direct interactions between the postgraduate programs of UFES and those of partner universities abroad.
Under these agreements, students complete their training under the supervision of two advisors, one from each institution involved, dividing their academic activities between the two countries as defined in the agreement. At the end of the process, with the single defense of the dissertation or thesis, the student obtains two postgraduate degrees, one granted by each university, as previously agreed.
At UFES, international co-tutorship is regulated by Resolution No. 36/2010 of the Council for Teaching, Research, and Extension (CEPE), which establishes the general rules for simultaneous degrees in two countries.
